April 25 Marks Parental Alienation Awareness Day: A Call for Healing and Advocacy

by Sharon Jackson  on April 25, 2025 under

April 25 is recognized as Parental Alienation Awareness Day (PAAD) in the United States, Canada, and Bermuda. This day was established as part of a global campaign to raise awareness about parental alienation—a behavior by a parent or trusted adult that can create alienation in the relationship between a child and another parent.

Understanding Parental Alienation

Parental alienation occurs when one parent, consciously or unconsciously, manipulates a child to reject the other parent. This manipulation can involve badmouthing, limiting contact, or creating an impression that the other parent is dangerous or unworthy. Such behaviors can severely damage the child's relationship with the alienated parent and have long-term psychological effects.

As Dr. Edward Kruk notes, parental alienation is "a form of family violence" that can have profound impacts on children and families.

The Impact on Children

Children subjected to parental alienation may experience confusion, guilt, anxiety, and depression. They might adopt the alienating parent's negative views, leading to strained or severed relationships with the other parent. Over time, this can affect their self-esteem and ability to form healthy relationships.

Legal and Therapeutic Interventions

Addressing parental alienation requires a multifaceted approach:

  • Legal Action: Courts can intervene to enforce custody agreements and ensure both parents have access to their children.

  • Therapy: Family therapy can help rebuild trust and communication between the child and the alienated parent.

  • Education: Raising awareness among parents, legal professionals, and mental health practitioners is crucial to identify and address alienation early.
